Japan travel costs by season: when is it cheapest?

Last checked 2026-10-21
Train fares in Japan barely move with the seasons (Smart EX tickets change by a few hundred yen), but hotel prices swing a lot.
Hotel prices through the year
- Peak: Tokyo business hotels peaked at ¥17,800 a night in April 2026, and October and November were also high.
- Low: the cheapest month was June 2026 at ¥11,900, with January also low.
- Weekends: Saturday nights cost about 37% more than weekdays in central Tokyo and about 45% more in the outer wards.

Busy periods to plan around
- Cherry blossom season, late March to early April in Tokyo and Kyoto.
- Golden Week, late April to early May, when much of Japan is on holiday.
- Obon, mid-August.
- New Year.
- Autumn leaves in Kyoto, usually November.
Regional peaks differ: Hokkaido is busiest in summer and during the Sapporo Snow Festival in February, so the countryside is not always cheaper.
Train fares by season
Smart EX prices drop ¥200 on off-peak days and rise ¥200 to ¥400 on peak days (¥400 to ¥800 on super peak days) for routes crossing the Tokaido, Sanyo or Kyushu Shinkansen (Smart EX service price list (PDF dated 1 April 2025)).

How big is the swing?
Using the Tokyo business hotel figures above, a 5 night stay at the April 2026 average would be 5 x ¥17,800 = ¥89,000 (US$567), and at the June 2026 average 5 x ¥11,900 = ¥59,500 (US$379). That is a difference of ¥29,500 for the same number of nights (Metro Engine Research via HotelBank: Tokyo business hotel ADR trend). Weekends add more: Saturday nights cost about 37% more than weekdays in central Tokyo and about 45% more in the outer wards.
Across Japan, business hotels averaged ¥14,860 (US$95) a room in July 2026, with Tokyo at ¥17,147 (US$109) and Osaka at ¥13,142 (US$84) (Metro Engine Research via HotelBank: business hotel ADR, July 2026). In April 2026, Kyoto (¥22,000) and Tokyo (¥21,400) were the most expensive prefectures (Metro Engine Research via HotelBank: business hotel ADR, July 2026).
Season by season
Spring (March to May)
Cherry blossom season brings the highest hotel prices of the year in Tokyo and Kyoto, as the April 2026 figures show. Golden Week, from late April into early May, is a national holiday period when many Japanese people travel. If you want blossoms, book rooms early, and consider sleeping in Osaka rather than Kyoto.
Summer (June to August)
June was the cheapest month for Tokyo hotels in the 2025 to 2026 data (Metro Engine Research via HotelBank: Tokyo business hotel ADR trend). It is also the rainy season in much of Japan. Obon, in mid-August, is another national travel peak. Hokkaido is at its busiest in summer.
Autumn (September to November)
October and November were among the higher months for Tokyo hotels (Metro Engine Research via HotelBank: Tokyo business hotel ADR trend). Kyoto's autumn leaves usually peak in November and draw big crowds.
Winter (December to February)
January was one of the lower months for Tokyo hotels (Metro Engine Research via HotelBank: Tokyo business hotel ADR trend). New Year is a holiday period, and the Sapporo Snow Festival in February fills rooms in Hokkaido. Ski areas have their own peak.
What does not change much
Trains vary little. Smart EX prices on the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen move by ¥200 to ¥800 depending on the season (Smart EX service price list (PDF dated 1 April 2025)). JR group fares on the Thunderbird and Hokuriku Shinkansen follow a similar pattern: ¥200 less in off-peak, ¥200 more in peak and ¥400 more in super peak, for the reserved seat charge (JR group: Thunderbird and Hokuriku Shinkansen fares (October 2026)). Bus fares such as Alpico's Matsumoto to Takayama route (¥4,400) are listed as flat fares (Alpico: Takayama to Matsumoto bus).
Some airport tickets change by date of purchase rather than season. JR West's HARUKA One-way Ticket to Kyoto is ¥2,200 if bought by 31 October 2026 and ¥2,700 if bought from 1 November 2026 (JR West: HARUKA One-way Ticket).
Seasonal timetables
Some mountain routes run on seasonal timetables. Alpico's Takayama to Matsumoto bus, for example, has separate green season (1 April to 15 November 2026) and winter season timetables (Alpico: Takayama to Matsumoto bus). Check before planning an Alps trip in winter. Our 21 day itinerary includes this route.
Booking ahead in peak periods
- Rooms: book early for spring and autumn in Kyoto and Tokyo.
- Trains: Hayatoku 21 advance fares are sold from one month to 21 days before travel, and some busy periods are excluded (Smart EX: EX Hayatoku 21 overview).
- Buses: Alpico takes reservations up to one month ahead (Alpico: Takayama to Matsumoto bus).
Bottom line
If you can choose your month, the data points to June and January as the cheapest for Tokyo rooms, and April as the most expensive. Trains barely change. Shift a few nights from Saturday to weekdays and from Kyoto to Osaka and you save more than any train discount. See accommodation costs for city prices, and enter your start date in the trip planner to see a warning for busy months.
A worked example: same trip, two months
Four nights in Tokyo for two people in one room. At the April 2026 average: 4 x ¥17,800 = ¥71,200 (US$453). At the June 2026 average: 4 x ¥11,900 = ¥47,600 (US$303) (Metro Engine Research via HotelBank: Tokyo business hotel ADR trend). The Tokyo to Kyoto Smart EX Nozomi price for the same couple changes by at most a few hundred yen each, from ¥13,970 in regular season (Smart EX service price list (PDF dated 1 April 2025)). The room is where the season shows.
