Japan tips: things to try

The best parts of a Japan trip often cost little. Here is what we would put on any first-timer's list, with the etiquette that goes with each.

  1. 1.Onsen: wash first, towel out

Wash your whole body at the showers before getting in, keep your small towel and your hair out of the water, and bathe without swimwear. Tattoo rules vary by venue, so check first or look for a private bath.

  2. 2.Karaoke in a private room

Karaoke boxes are private rooms rented by the group. JNTO lists typical rates of ¥100 to ¥600 per person per 30 minutes, cheaper off-peak. Ask about the "free time" all-you-can-sing price if you plan to stay a while.

  3. 3.Izakaya night

  6. 6.Late-night culture
