Tokyo to Osaka by Shinkansen: every ticket price compared (2026)

A Tokyo to Osaka Shinkansen ticket costs ¥14,720 one way for an adult in a reserved ordinary seat in regular season, which is about US$94. That figure is from NAVITIME's Shinkansen fare table, which lists fares under the revision that took effect on 14 March 2026. Go there and back and you are looking at ¥29,440 (about US$187) per adult.
That is the sticker price. We pulled every fare type we could source for this route, from the cheap advance deal to the Green Car, so you can see where the real savings are and where they are not.
Where the trains actually go
Shinkansen trains from Tokyo do not stop at Osaka Station. They stop at Shin-Osaka, on the north side of the city, and every fare in this post is to Shin-Osaka. From there you change to a local JR line or the Osaka Metro Midosuji Line to reach Umeda, Namba or wherever your hotel is. That last hop is a normal city fare and is not included in the Shinkansen ticket price, so budget a little for it.
All three Tokaido Shinkansen train types run this route: Nozomi, Hikari and Kodama. Most travellers book Nozomi because it makes the fewest stops. That choice matters for the price only in two cases, which we cover below: Smart EX fares and the JR Pass.
Every fare we could source, side by side
| Ticket (Tokyo to Shin-Osaka, one way) | Adult | USD |
|---|---|---|
| Non-reserved ordinary seat | ¥13,870 | US$88 |
| Reserved ordinary seat, regular season | ¥14,720 | US$94 |
| Smart EX, Nozomi, reserved, regular season | ¥14,520 | US$92 |
| Smart EX, Hikari or Kodama, reserved, regular season | ¥14,200 | US$90 |
| Smart EX Hayatoku 21 (book ahead, limited seats) | ¥12,980 | US$83 |
| Green Car (approximate, per NAVITIME) | about ¥20,450 | US$130 |

Converted at ¥157.05 per US$1 (ECB reference rate, 2026-10-22). Last checked 2026-10-23.
The spread is wider than most people expect. Between the Hayatoku 21 fare and the Green Car, the gap is about ¥7,470 each way for the same distance on the same line.
The cheaper ways to book
Non-reserved seats. At ¥13,870, a non-reserved seat is ¥850 less than a reserved one. You board the non-reserved cars and take any free seat. NAVITIME notes that Nozomi has no non-reserved cars during peak periods, so on holiday dates this option shrinks. Outside the busy seasons we have found it a sensible saving for a solo traveller with light bags. For a family that wants to sit together, we would pay for the reservation.
Smart EX. This is the online booking service run by JR Central and JR West, and it has an English version of the site. The Smart EX service fares PDF lists Tokyo to Shin-Osaka at ¥14,520 on Nozomi and ¥14,200 on Hikari or Kodama in regular season. The same document says these fares go down ¥200 in off-peak periods and up in peak and super-peak periods. A modest saving, but it adds up across a group.
Hayatoku 21. This is the deal we would chase if our dates were fixed. Book at least 21 days ahead on Smart EX and the official Hayatoku 21 price list gives Tokyo to Shin-Osaka at ¥12,980 per adult and ¥6,480 per child. Against the regular reserved fare, that is ¥1,740 saved per adult each way. Seats at this price are limited, so it rewards booking as soon as your plans are firm. Our guide to cheaper Shinkansen tickets covers how these discount fares work across other routes.
Travelling with children
Children ride for roughly half price. On Smart EX the service fares PDF lists Tokyo to Shin-Osaka at ¥7,250 per child on Nozomi and ¥7,090 on Hikari or Kodama in regular season. With Hayatoku 21 it drops to ¥6,480.
So for two adults and two children on Hayatoku 21, one way comes to ¥38,920 (about US$248). Book the same family at the Smart EX Nozomi fare and it is ¥43,540 (about US$277). Our family of four trip cost guide puts these fares next to hotels and food.
Is a JR Pass worth it for Tokyo and Osaka?
For this one trip, no. A 7 day ordinary Japan Rail Pass is ¥50,000 for an adult bought online, according to the official Japan Rail Pass site. A Tokyo to Osaka round trip at the regular reserved fare is ¥29,440, so you would need a lot more train travel in the same week to break even.
There is also the Nozomi question. Pass holders who want to ride Nozomi need a separate NOZOMI MIZUHO Ticket, which the official special ticket page lists at ¥4,960 for Tokyo to Shin-Osaka. That is per ride, so a round trip on Nozomi adds ¥9,920 on top of the pass. Hikari and Kodama need no extra ticket.
The pass makes more sense when Osaka is one stop on a longer loop, for example Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima and back. Plug your own trips into our JR Pass vs single tickets calculator and it does the sums, including the Nozomi tickets if you tick that box. Our longer guide on whether the JR Pass is worth it explains the break-even in more detail.
Our practical tips
- Book to Shin-Osaka, then plan the last hop. Check which line serves your hotel before you arrive, so you are not working it out on the platform with a suitcase.
- Stopping in Kyoto on the way? Kyoto is on the same line, a few stops before Shin-Osaka. Our Tokyo to Kyoto fare breakdown has those prices.
- Watch the season. Reserved fares change with the calendar. NAVITIME says the difference is about ¥200 per adult between seasons, and peak dates also cut non-reserved options on Nozomi.
- Check the fare on the day you book. Our figures are a planning estimate. The operator's price on the booking screen is the one that counts.
Putting it in your budget
The train is one of the few costs on a Japan trip you can pin down exactly, so we would put it in first. A Tokyo and Osaka round trip runs from ¥25,960 on Hayatoku 21 to ¥29,440 at the regular reserved fare per adult. Add your room rate and daily spending in our trip budget calculator, and if you are still deciding where to base yourself, our Tokyo vs Kyoto vs Osaka cost comparison shows how hotel prices differ between the three cities.
