Japan trip cost for a family of four (2026): a sourced 7 day example

Last checked 2026-10-21
Most Japan budgets online are written for one or two adults. Families have different questions: do children pay on trains, how many rooms do we need, and how much does it all add up to? This guide answers those with official rules and sourced prices, and then builds a sample week for two adults and two children aged 6 to 11. Where we have to estimate, we say so.
Children on trains: the rules
JR Central's rules for the Shinkansen are the clearest official reference (JR Central: adults and children):
- Children aged 6 to 11 pay half the adult basic fare, limited express fare and reserved seat charge. In the Green Car the Green charge is not discounted.
- Children aged 1 to 5 and babies generally travel free, up to two per paying adult or child, as long as they do not use their own reserved seat, Green Car seat or berth.
Private railways use similar categories. Keikyu, for example, treats ages 12 and over as adults, 6 to 11 as children, 1 to 5 as toddlers who pay the child fare only when travelling alone, and under 1 as free (Keikyu: tickets and age categories).
The practical upshot: a child aged 6 to 11 costs about half an adult on most trains, and a younger child on your lap costs nothing but also has no seat. On a long Shinkansen ride with a 4 or 5 year old, many parents decide to buy a child ticket to guarantee a seat. That is a choice, not a rule.
Airport transfers for four
- Narita, Keisei Skyliner to Ueno: ¥2,470 adult and ¥1,240 child, one way (Keisei: Skyliner fares from major stations). Two adults and two children: ¥7,420 (US$47).
- Narita, Airport Limousine Bus to Shinjuku: ¥3,600 adult and ¥1,800 child (Airport Limousine Bus: Narita to Shinjuku area). For four: ¥10,800 (US$69). Pricier, but door to door with bags.
- Haneda, Limousine Bus to Shinjuku: ¥1,400 adult, ¥700 child (Airport Limousine Bus: Haneda to Shinjuku/Nakano area). For four: ¥4,200 (US$27).
- Kansai Airport, JR HARUKA to Kyoto (bought from 1 November 2026): ¥2,700 adult and ¥1,350 child (JR West: HARUKA One-way Ticket). For four: ¥8,100 (US$52).
More options are in our airport transfers guide.
Rooms
This is where families pay the most. Standard Japanese business hotel rooms are small and usually sleep two. A family of four will often need either two rooms, a larger family room, or an apartment-style stay. We do not have a sourced average for family rooms, so the example below uses two business hotel rooms, which gives a reasonable upper reference.
Business hotels averaged, per room for two, tax included, in July 2026: Tokyo ¥17,147 (US$109), Kyoto ¥16,177 (US$103) and Osaka ¥13,142 (US$84) (Metro Engine Research via HotelBank: business hotel ADR, July 2026). Prices are higher in peak seasons: Tokyo and Kyoto were the two most expensive prefectures in April 2026. See accommodation costs for more.
Food and sightseeing
japan-guide.com's medium budget puts lunch at ¥800 to ¥1,500 and dinner at ¥1,000 to ¥2,500 per person, with famous temples charging ¥500 to ¥1,000 and many shrines free (japan-guide.com: Japan travel budgets). Children often eat smaller portions or from children's menus, but we have no official figure for that, so the example uses adult ranges for everyone and treats the result as an upper estimate.
A sample week: Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka
Three nights in Tokyo, three in Kyoto and one in Osaka, the same shape as our 7 day itinerary. Two adults, two children aged 6 to 11.
| Item | How we worked it out | Total |
|---|---|---|
| Rooms (two rooms) | 2 rooms x (3 Tokyo nights x ¥17,147 + 3 Kyoto nights x ¥16,177 + 1 Osaka night x ¥13,142) | ¥226,228 (US$1,440) |
| Long-distance trains, adults | 2 x (Tokyo to Kyoto ¥14,170 regular reserved + Kyoto to Shin-Osaka ¥2,880 Smart EX) | ¥34,100 (US$217) |
| Long-distance trains, children | About half the adult total under JR's child rules. Estimate: exact child fares are rounded per ticket. | about ¥17,050 (US$109) |
| Narita to Ueno, Skyliner | 2 x ¥2,470 + 2 x ¥1,240 | ¥7,420 (US$47) |
Rooms: Metro Engine Research via HotelBank: business hotel ADR, July 2026. Trains: NAVITIME Shinkansen fare table; Smart EX service price list (PDF dated 1 April 2025) (PDF dated 1 April 2025); child rule JR Central: adults and children. Skyliner: Keisei: Skyliner fares from major stations. Last checked 2026-10-22.
That gives about ¥284,798 (US$1,813) before food, sightseeing, local transport and the flight home from Osaka. Food at japan-guide's medium ranges for four people, lunch and dinner, would add roughly ¥7,200 to ¥16,000 a day by our arithmetic (4 x (¥800 + ¥1,000) to 4 x (¥1,500 + ¥2,500)), not counting breakfast or snacks.
Ways families save
- Sleep in Osaka, visit Kyoto. Osaka was the cheapest of the three cities in July 2026, and Kyoto to Shin-Osaka is a short ride.
- Book Shinkansen early. Hayatoku 21 fares on Smart EX cut Tokyo to Kyoto to ¥12,430 for adults when booked at least 21 days ahead. See cheaper Shinkansen tickets.
- Use Haneda if you can. The Limousine Bus to Shinjuku from Haneda costs half what it does from Narita.
- Send the bags. Two big suitcases from Tokyo to Kyoto by Yamato cost ¥4,620 to ¥5,260 at Size 140 to 160 (¥100 less per bag if you drop them off), and make the train day far easier with children. See luggage forwarding.
- Child IC cards. Buy child Suica or ICOCA cards so the child fare comes off automatically. See IC cards.
- Skip the JR Pass for this route. Check the numbers for your own trip with our JR Pass calculator.
What we left out
Flights, which change daily and are usually the biggest single cost for a family; theme parks and paid attractions, which vary a lot; and travel insurance. Add those to your own total.
The trip budget calculator lets you set travellers and rooms separately, so you can model two rooms for four people and switch between Budget, Mid-range and Comfort presets.
Younger children
If your children are under 6, the train figures above fall sharply: up to two children aged 1 to 5 travel free with each paying adult on JR, provided they do not take their own reserved seat (JR Central: adults and children).
