Your first and last journeys in Japan are the airport transfers, and the price range is wider than most people expect. From the same airport you can pay a few hundred yen or a few thousand, depending on the train or bus you pick. This guide lists the official adult one-way fares for the main options at Tokyo's two airports and at Kansai International, so you can decide before you land.

All figures are per adult, one way, from each operator's own page. Taxis and private transfers are not included because their prices depend on traffic, time of day and the company, and we have no official fixed figure to quote.

Narita

Narita is the further of the two airports, so the transfer is a bigger part of your budget. Three options cover most travellers.

Haneda

Haneda is much closer to central Tokyo, and the trains are cheap.

Note that Keikyu and Monorail fares above cover only that railway. If you change to JR or a subway, add that fare as well.

JR HARUKA

The HARUKA limited express runs from Kansai Airport to Tennoji, Osaka (Shin-Osaka) and Kyoto. JR West sells a discounted HARUKA One-way Ticket to visitors holding a foreign passport and entering as a temporary visitor. The price depends on the date you buy it, not the date you ride: tickets sold up to 31 October 2026 cost ¥2,200 to Kyoto, and tickets sold from 1 November 2026 cost ¥2,700. Child prices are half (JR West: HARUKA One-way Ticket).

The old ICOCA & HARUKA bundle was discontinued on 30 September 2023 (JR West: end of ICOCA & HARUKA sales (PDF, 26 July 2023)), so older blog posts quoting it are out of date.

Nankai Rapi:t

Nankai's Rapi:t limited express runs from Kansai Airport to Namba in as little as 34 minutes (Nankai: Limited Express Rapi:t). The cheapest official way to ride it is the Rapi:t Digital Ticket: ¥1,410 for a Regular Seat or ¥1,590 for a Super Seat, adult, including the base fare (Nankai: Rapi:t Digital Ticket). You buy it online, choose your train and seat on your phone, and scan a QR code at a designated gate. It is valid only on the chosen date.

Without the digital ticket you pay the base fare plus a limited express charge of ¥700 (Regular) or ¥910 (Super Seat). Buying the express ticket on board costs ¥300 extra (Nankai: Limited Express Rapi:t).

Worked examples

The difference between Narita and Haneda transfers can be thousands of yen for a couple, which is worth weighing when you compare flights. Our flight costs guide covers the airport choice.

Bags

If you have big suitcases, a train with a change or two can be harder than the fare suggests. One option is to send bags ahead by courier. Sagawa's Tokyo Station counter, for example, delivers a suitcase up to 140 cm and 20 kg to Haneda the same day for ¥2,840 or to Narita for ¥3,390 if you drop it off in time. See luggage forwarding in Japan for details.

Paying

Keisei, Keikyu and Tokyo Monorail publish slightly lower fares when you pay by IC card at the gate. See Suica, PASMO and ICOCA for which card to buy on arrival. Reserved trains such as the Skyliner, N'EX, HARUKA and Rapi:t also need a seat or express ticket.

Add your transfers to the trip budget calculator so they are part of your total.
