Flights to Japan: airports, timing and transfer costs

By the Japan Travel Costs team. Every figure links to its source with the date we last checked it, and figures we cannot verify are left out. About us.

Flights are usually the biggest single cost of a Japan trip, and also the one that changes fastest. Fares move daily with demand, so we do not publish price figures. Instead, here is how to search well.

Once you have a fare, add it to the trip budget calculator as part of your total, and use the trip planner to build the days in between.

Count the cost of getting into town

A cheap fare into the "wrong" airport can cost you back on the ground. Compare the official one-way adult fares into the city:

AirportCheapest train we listFaster or door to door
Haneda (Tokyo)Keikyu to Shinagawa ¥330 (Keikyu: Haneda Airport fare and time search)Limousine Bus to Shinjuku ¥1,400 (Airport Limousine Bus: Haneda to Shinjuku/Nakano area)
Narita (Tokyo)Skyliner to Ueno ¥2,470 (Keisei: Skyliner fares from major stations)N'EX to Tokyo ¥3,140 (JR East: N'EX tickets); Limousine Bus to Shinjuku ¥3,600 (Airport Limousine Bus: Narita to Shinjuku area)
Kansai (Osaka, Kyoto)Rapi:t Digital Ticket to Namba ¥1,410 (Nankai: Rapi:t Digital Ticket)HARUKA to Kyoto ¥2,700 from 1 November 2026 (JR West: HARUKA One-way Ticket)

Last checked 2026-10-22. Full details in our airport transfers guide.

For a couple flying in and out of Narita on the Skyliner, the transfers alone are 4 x ¥2,470 = ¥9,880 (US$63). Through Haneda on Keikyu, the same trips are ¥1,320 (US$8). If a Haneda fare is a little more expensive than a Narita one, it may still be the cheaper trip overall, and it usually saves time.

Open jaw: in to Tokyo, out of Osaka

Most first itineraries run Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka. If you fly into Tokyo and out of Kansai, you avoid riding back to Tokyo at the end. That return Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka to Tokyo is ¥14,720 per adult at the regular reserved fare (NAVITIME Shinkansen fare table), or ¥12,980 on Hayatoku 21 (Smart EX Hayatoku 21 price list (from 13 March 2026)). For two adults that is ¥25,960 to ¥29,440 saved, plus most of a day. Compare the open jaw fare with a simple return and add this saving to the side of the open jaw.

When to search

We do not publish fare figures, and we have no official source for the "best day to book", so we will not give one. What reliably helps:

Japanese holidays and hotel prices

Fares and hotels both rise at busy times. On the hotel side we have data: Tokyo business hotels averaged ¥17,800 a night in April 2026 against ¥11,900 in June 2026, and Saturday nights cost about 37% more than weekdays in central Tokyo (Metro Engine Research via HotelBank: Tokyo business hotel ADR trend). Flights tend to follow the same busy periods: cherry blossom season, Golden Week, Obon and New Year. If your dates are flexible, look at the shoulder months. See Japan travel costs by season.

Using the arrival day well

Long-haul flights often land in the afternoon or evening. Plan that first day lightly: get the IC card, check in, eat nearby. An IC card can be bought at the airport; Welcome Suica and TOURIST PASMO machines are at Narita and Haneda (JR East: Welcome Suica; PASMO: TOURIST PASMO). See IC cards.

Departure day: tax-free goods

From 1 November 2026, tax-free shopping refunds are processed when you leave Japan, and customs may ask to see the goods before you check in your bags (Japan Tourism Agency: tax-free page for travellers). Leave extra time at the airport if you bought tax-free items. Our tax-free guide explains the steps.

Sending bags to the airport

On the last day you can send suitcases to the airport and spend the day free. Sagawa's Tokyo Station counter delivers a suitcase up to 140 cm and 20 kg to Haneda the same day for ¥2,840 or Narita for ¥3,390, with a drop-off deadline (Sagawa Express: Hands-Free Travel, Tokyo Service Center). See luggage forwarding.

Putting it together

Once you have a fare, add it, the airport transfers and the rest of the trip into the trip budget calculator. If the flight is a big share of your total, a slightly longer trip often spreads that cost over more days.
