How much does Japan cost per day in 2026?

Last checked 2026-10-21
A day in Japan can cost very different amounts depending on where you sleep and eat. These ranges come from japan-guide.com's published sample budgets and cover accommodation, meals and sightseeing, but not transport between cities.
| Style | One traveller, per day | Two travellers, per day |
|---|---|---|
| Low budget | ¥5,000 to ¥13,000 | ¥9,000 to ¥19,000 |
| Medium budget | ¥13,000 to ¥28,000 | ¥19,000 to ¥46,000 |
| High budget | over ¥28,000 | over ¥46,000 |

Where the money goes
- Rooms: the biggest line. Business hotels averaged ¥14,860 per room a night across Japan in July 2026, ¥17,147 in Tokyo and ¥13,142 in Osaka (Metro Engine Research via HotelBank: business hotel ADR, July 2026). See accommodation costs for more.
- Food: japan-guide puts a medium-budget lunch at ¥800 to ¥1,500 and dinner at ¥1,000 to ¥2,500 (japan-guide.com: Japan travel budgets).
- Sightseeing: famous temples charge ¥500 to ¥1,000 and many shrines are free (japan-guide.com: Japan travel budgets).
- Trains: long-distance rides are priced separately. Tokyo to Kyoto is ¥14,170 one way at the regular reserved fare (NAVITIME Shinkansen fare table).
To turn these into a total for your dates and group, use the trip budget calculator, which has Budget, Mid-range and Comfort presets based on the same sources.
How to read the ranges
The japan-guide ranges include accommodation, meals and sightseeing but leave out long-distance transport. That makes them useful for daily planning, but you still need to add your trains, airport transfers and anything special. The lowest figures assume dorm beds and very simple food; the top of the medium range suits a comfortable business hotel and eating out twice a day.
Rooms by city
Because rooms are the largest part of the daily figure, the city you sleep in changes your daily cost more than anything else. Business hotel averages per room, July 2026 (Metro Engine Research via HotelBank: business hotel ADR, July 2026):
| Area | Average per room | Per person if two share |
|---|---|---|
| Japan average | ¥14,860 (US$95) | ¥7,430 |
| Tokyo | ¥17,147 (US$109) | about ¥8,574 |
| Kyoto | ¥16,177 (US$103) | about ¥8,089 |
| Osaka | ¥13,142 (US$84) | ¥6,571 |
Per person figures are our own division by two. Last checked 2026-10-22.
Three sample days
These are worked from the sourced figures above. They are examples, not quotes.
A careful day in Osaka, two people sharing
- Room: ¥13,142 / 2 = ¥6,571 each.
- Lunch ¥800 and dinner ¥1,000, the low end of japan-guide's medium ranges.
- One temple or shrine: from free to ¥500.
About ¥8,400 to ¥8,900 per person before local transport and breakfast.
A comfortable day in Kyoto, two people sharing
- Room: about ¥8,089 each.
- Lunch ¥1,500 and dinner ¥2,500, the top of the medium ranges.
- Two famous temples at ¥500 to ¥1,000 each.
About ¥13,100 to ¥14,100 per person, again before transport and breakfast.
A travel day
Add the train. Tokyo to Kyoto is ¥14,170 at the regular reserved fare or ¥12,430 with Hayatoku 21 booked 21 days ahead (NAVITIME Shinkansen fare table; Smart EX Hayatoku 21 price list (from 13 March 2026)). On that day the train can cost as much as the rest of the day combined.
What pushes the daily cost up
- Peak dates. Tokyo hotels averaged ¥17,800 in April 2026 against ¥11,900 in June (Metro Engine Research via HotelBank: Tokyo business hotel ADR trend).
- Weekends. Saturday nights about 37% higher than weekdays in central Tokyo (Metro Engine Research via HotelBank: Tokyo business hotel ADR trend).
- Travelling alone. A single room still costs most of a double, so solo travellers pay more per person.
- Ryokan nights. These are often priced differently from hotels, so check whether meals are included and whether the price is per person or per room, and budget them as a separate line.
What keeps it down
- Sleep in Osaka and day-trip to Kyoto or Nara.
- Eat a big lunch. Lunch sets are cheaper than dinner in many restaurants; japan-guide's ranges reflect this.
- Use free sights. Many shrines, parks, markets and neighbourhoods cost nothing.
- Use an IC card and walk; see IC cards.
Turning it into a trip total
Multiply your daily figure by the number of days, add trains between cities, airport transfers and one-off costs, then add a buffer. Our guide on how to build a realistic Japan trip budget walks through the steps, and the trip planner prices a day-by-day itinerary for you. Families should also read Japan trip cost for a family of four.
Per day, by trip length
Longer trips usually cost less per day, because the fixed costs (flights, airport transfers, the big train rides) are spread over more days. Two worked examples for one adult, rooms shared with a partner, using the averages above:
- 7 days (3 Tokyo, 3 Kyoto, 1 Osaka): room share ¥56,557 (US$360), trains Tokyo to Kyoto ¥14,170 and Kyoto to Shin-Osaka ¥2,880, airport ¥2,470. That is about ¥76,077 (US$484) before food, which is about ¥10,868 (US$69) a day.
- The same trip with 4 extra nights in Osaka: add 4 x ¥6,571 for the room share. About ¥102,361 (US$652) in total, or about ¥9,305 (US$59) a day before food.
Our arithmetic from Metro Engine Research via HotelBank: business hotel ADR, July 2026, NAVITIME Shinkansen fare table, Smart EX service price list (PDF dated 1 April 2025) and Keisei: Skyliner fares from major stations. Last checked 2026-10-22.
Solo travellers
The per-person room cost roughly doubles when you do not share, because the averages above are per room. A solo traveller at the Tokyo average would pay ¥17,147 (US$109) a night, not ¥8,574 (US$55). Hostels and capsule hotels exist for this reason; see accommodation costs for typical ranges by type.
Paying day to day
Most daily spending in cities can go on a card or an IC card, but small restaurants, temples and rural buses can still be cash only. An IC card like Suica or ICOCA covers trains, buses and many shops; JR East notes that Suica top-ups at its machines are cash only (JR East: Suica (price, deposit, top-ups, refunds)). See IC cards.
