Japan tips: phones, wi-fi and apps

Staying online in Japan is straightforward. Free Wi-Fi exists, but you will want your own data for maps and train times.
1.Free Wi-Fi is patchy, so bring data
Airports, many stations, hotels and cafes have free Wi-Fi. For reliable coverage on the move, JNTO suggests a pocket Wi-Fi router or a SIM or eSIM.

2.Check your phone is unlocked

3.Install the Safety tips app
The Safety tips app, supervised by the Japan Tourism Agency, pushes earthquake early warnings, tsunami and weather warnings in several languages.

4.Visit Japan Web at major airports
At Narita, Haneda, Kansai, Chubu, Fukuoka, New Chitose and Naha you can start the tax refund check online via Visit Japan Web, using the dedicated Wi-Fi in the departure lobby.

5.Set up mobile Suica before you need it
Welcome Suica Mobile needs Apple Pay and a card in your own name. Set it up on hotel Wi-Fi rather than at a busy gate.
