Is the JR Pass worth it in 2026?

Last checked 2026-10-21
A 7 day adult ordinary pass costs ¥50,000 bought online (¥53,000 as an overseas exchange order), per the official Japan Rail Pass site.
A Tokyo to Kyoto round trip at the regular reserved fare is ¥28,340, so that trip alone covers just over half of a 7 day pass. You would need a lot more long-distance riding inside 7 days before the pass wins on Shinkansen fares alone.
Quick rules of thumb
- Just Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka with one return: single tickets come out cheaper on Shinkansen fares.
- Lots of long trips in a short window: run the numbers in our comparison tool.
- Nozomi trains need an extra ticket for pass holders (official site), so check that cost first.
Fares: one-way adult, reserved ordinary seat, regular season, from NAVITIME Travel's Shinkansen fare table (based on fares effective 14 March 2026). Peak and off-peak dates and train type change the price. Last checked 2026-10-21.
