Shin-Osaka to Himeji costs ¥4,070 (about US$26) one way for an adult in a reserved ordinary seat in the regular season, on the Mizuho listed by the source. Peak and off-peak dates, a non-reserved seat or a Green Car change the price.

Route and train

Trains run from Shin-Osaka to Himeji, the station for Himeji Castle. The fare shown is for a Mizuho, the first train listed by the source; Mizuho and Nozomi need the special ticket with a JR Pass, while Sakura, Hikari and Kodama do not. JR rapid trains on the conventional line also run from Osaka Station; see the next section.

Cheaper conventional trains

JR Kobe Line rapid trains run from Osaka Station to Himeji with no change for ¥1,460 (about US$9), about 1 hour in the source, and are covered by the JR Pass (NAVITIME route search). That is cheaper than the Shinkansen but slower.

Does the JR Pass cover it?

Nozomi and Mizuho trains need a separate NOZOMI MIZUHO Ticket with the JR Pass. We have not published its price for this route yet; see the official special ticket page.

Is a JR Pass worth it for this trip?

A round trip (¥8,140) is about 16% of a 7 day JR Pass (¥50,000). On its own this route will not justify a pass; single tickets are cheaper unless the rest of your week involves several long trips.
