Hiroshima to Miyajima cost 2026: train, ferry and visitor tax

Last checked 2026-10-26
Miyajima is the most popular side trip from Hiroshima, and it is cheap. You take a train or streetcar to Miyajimaguchi on the mainland, then a 10 minute ferry across to the island. This guide adds up the fares from the operators and NAVITIME, so you know what a day trip costs before you go.
The fares, step by step
| Leg | Adult, one way | Source |
|---|---|---|
| JR San'yo Line, Hiroshima to Miyajimaguchi | ¥420 (US$3) | NAVITIME Travel route search: Hiroshima to Miyajima (JR San'yo Line ¥420 plus JR ferry ¥200) |
| Hiroden streetcar, Hiroshima Station to Hiroden-Miyajimaguchi (alternative to JR) | ¥240 (US$2) | NAVITIME Travel route search: Hiroden streetcar, Hiroshima Station to Hiroden-Miyajimaguchi (¥240) |
| JR ferry, Miyajimaguchi to Miyajima | ¥200 (US$1) (child ¥100) | JR West Miyajima Ferry: fares (Japanese) |
| Miyajima Visitor Tax, once per visit | ¥100 (US$1) | Hatsukaichi City: Miyajima Visitor Tax |
Last checked 2026-10-26. NAVITIME lists the JR train and the JR ferry together at ¥620, which matches the two fares above. The JR ferry's English fare image still shows an older ¥180 adult fare; we use the ¥200 on its Japanese fare page, which NAVITIME also lists.
JR or streetcar?
- JR San'yo Line. Faster. Hatsukaichi City puts it at about 25 minutes from Hiroshima Station to Miyajimaguchi (Hatsukaichi City: access to Miyajima (Japanese)). The ferry pier is a short walk from the station.
- Hiroden streetcar. Cheaper at ¥240 (US$2), but slower: the city gives about 60 minutes (Hatsukaichi City: access to Miyajima (Japanese)). It is handy if you are staying near the Peace Memorial Park or downtown rather than at Hiroshima Station.
The streetcar is not JR, so a JR Pass does not cover it.
Day-trip totals
- One adult, JR both ways, JR ferry both ways, tax: 2 x ¥420 + 2 x ¥200 + ¥100 = ¥1,340 (US$9).
- One adult, streetcar both ways, JR ferry both ways, tax: 2 x ¥240 + 2 x ¥200 + ¥100 = ¥980 (US$6).
- One adult with a JR Pass, JR both ways: the train and ferry are covered, so you pay only the ¥100 (US$1) visitor tax.
The visitor tax is collected with your ferry fare: the official page says it is included in tickets bought at the machine or window and taken automatically at the IC card gates, and preschool children are exempt (Hatsukaichi City: Miyajima Visitor Tax).
Does the JR Pass pay off for this trip?
Not on its own. A return trip is a few hundred yen, against ¥50,000 for a 7 day pass (Official Japan Rail Pass price page). What matters is the long legs into Hiroshima. Tokyo to Hiroshima costs ¥19,760 one way on a regular reserved Nozomi ticket (NAVITIME Travel: Shinkansen fare table (Tokyo to Hiroshima, Nozomi reserved)); our Tokyo to Hiroshima Shinkansen guide has cheaper advance prices, and the JR Pass vs tickets location planner works out the whole route.
