Hakata to Kumamoto costs ¥5,840 (about US$37) one way for an adult in a reserved ordinary seat in the regular season, on the Tsubame listed by the source. Peak and off-peak dates, a non-reserved seat or a Green Car change the price.

Route and train

Tsubame, Sakura and Mizuho trains run from Hakata to Kumamoto. Only Mizuho needs the special ticket with a JR Pass.

Does the JR Pass cover it?

Nozomi and Mizuho trains need a separate NOZOMI MIZUHO Ticket with the JR Pass. We have not published its price for this route yet; see the official special ticket page.

Is a JR Pass worth it for this trip?

A round trip (¥11,680) is about 23% of a 7 day JR Pass (¥50,000). On its own this route will not justify a pass; single tickets are cheaper unless the rest of your week involves several long trips.
