Kyoto to Himeji costs ¥5,270 (about US$34) one way for an adult in a reserved ordinary seat in the regular season, on the Hikari listed by the source. Peak and off-peak dates, a non-reserved seat or a Green Car change the price.

Route and train

The Shinkansen runs from Kyoto through Shin-Osaka to Himeji, the station for Himeji Castle. The fare shown is for a Hikari, the first train listed by the source. Nozomi and Mizuho need the special ticket with a JR Pass. JR rapid trains on the conventional line are cheaper and run with no change; see the next section.

Cheaper conventional trains

JR rapid trains on the JR Kyoto and Kobe lines run from Kyoto to Himeji with no change for ¥2,210 (about US$14), about 1 hour 33 minutes in the source, and are covered by the JR Pass (NAVITIME route search). That is cheaper than the Shinkansen but slower.

Does the JR Pass cover it?

Pass holders who want Nozomi or Mizuho need a NOZOMI MIZUHO Ticket: ¥2,530 (about US$16) per adult per ride on this route (official Japan Rail Pass site, last checked 2026-11-02).

Is a JR Pass worth it for this trip?

A round trip (¥10,540) is about 21% of a 7 day JR Pass (¥50,000). On its own this route will not justify a pass; single tickets are cheaper unless the rest of your week involves several long trips.
